So this post is a last ditch effort to see if anyone has any decent alternatives of sampler emulation and samples of actual samplers while also to gain some insight into some options for hardware if I choose to go down that path. With all the hype aside I can honestly say that they all have a certain sound that I can easily hear the difference, I hate to sound like a snob, and perhaps I'm just another vintage junkie, but for me it's a massive difference to any hardware that I've used and I own many ( 10+ hardware synths from 1983 - 1994 ) I've tried a plethora of soft synths including all the one's people rave about. The D50 I found gave me that Mojo and I've since realized that that's partly due to the sound of the S+S architecture I fell in love with and it's what has led me to my fascination with the 80's/early 90's hardware samplers.Īt first I thought I was only looking for the sound of vintage synths (which I also adore) but now I have realized that it's the unique sound of these samplers that I love so much. I totally acknowledge that post 80's gear and soft synths are amazing in their own right)

I sold my old JP8000 recently for this reason and a lot of software reminds me of that synth, and the era when everything got clean and sterile. Mid 90's gear and beyond I find too clean cut and sterile for my taste, lacking in that organic essence I like to refer to as "Mojo" Specify what exact jobs you are imagining/wanting this thing to do for you and you'll get more useful, specific advice.I'm Specifically looking for the sound of 80's hardware samplers, complete with the limitations that have so much to do with their sound. but they became prohibitively expensive in recent years. its my favorite for lofi but humongous drum sound. but at the time options for SD/CF etc were too far away, and with deadlines i face i didn't have the patience to deal with loading time and UI.

depeche, all industrial and cyberpunk scene etc. otoh its sampling is even more lofi and dirty - it is the sound of second half of 80s and early 90s. resonance gets really liquid, so it can sound much more like a "synth" than akai. but it has beautiful SSM2047 analog filters. i was lucky tho to buy it from my OCD friend who pimped it up with brand new VFD so it looks sexy as hell.Īlso, E-Mu EMAX. i still havent installed the SD card system, tho have scsi onboard which i heard is a prerequisite. Sounds just beautiful.yep, that's my choice. Has that sound that I just love but the main thing is that it actually slows and speeds up the sample to get the pitch rather than digitally resampling and interpolating like every sampler after it does.

Of the other samplers that I have owned, it reminds me of the Emax II, but with a better filter.Īkai S-950 with 2mb (mword?) upgrade and SD Card for loading samples into. Someone said it's great for drums and I think I agree with this. I've only had it a few days, and I haven't used it much because I need to replace the screen backlight, but first impressions are that it has a rather clean sound, but with a certain character. This last has lessened since I had the power supply recapped.Īlso bear in mind that it has a non-resonant digital filter.Īs for the Akai, mine is about 10 years newer than the EPS, so it has a much more refined sound.

It is also quite unreliable, prone to loose connections inside and overheating. On the downside, mine is unexpanded, so it has a small memory, and I have to use floppies to save samples. It has lots of modulation and performance control options, including polyphonic aftertouch. You can use ridiculously low sample rates, in which case you get really noisy and distorted samples. It is great for splitting and layering samples across the keyboard. It is also quite easy to use and lots of fun. The EPS is by far the grungiest of them all.

I'm GASing hard and need your advice if I should buy it!!! I've been really Gasing for a hardware sampler! Does the Ensoniq EPS Performance Sampler cut the mustard? and how does it compare to Akai S series in terms of vintage mojo?I have an Ensoniq EPS, an Emulator II and, for the past few days, an Akai CD3000XL. I have an opportunity to get this Ensoniq EPS Performance Sampler with a bucket load load of floppy disks for about 300 bucks
